Vallyn Bernard
The Spartans scored on their first three possessions to put the game away early against the Scots from Ben Lomond on Aug. 31.
By halftime the Spartans had scored six touchdowns and went to the locker room with a 39 – 0 lead.
Ryne Jones opened up the scoring floodgates with a 24-yard touchdown run. Dempsey Jeffs tossed two touchdown passes to Jordan Gee, a 34 yarder in the first quarter, and another for 27 yards to end the scoring in the first half.
Dempsey Jeffs snuck in a touchdown from a yard out with Chance Ariotti rushing 8 yards to score. Cody Allen brought everyone to their feet with an exciting 84-yard punt return for a touchdown in the second quarter. The Spartan offense was firing on all cylinders in this game.
The second half had Ryne Jones score on a 57 yard run for the final Spartan points of the game. Ryne had a great game with 128 of the Spartans’ 247 yards rushing.
Jordan Gee rushed for 48 yards, and with two touchdown catches for 61 yards had 109 yards of total offense for the night. Mike Jones rushed for 54 yards. Add in 69 yards through the air to this ground attack, and the Spartans stacked up 316 yards in total offense.
More than offense happened in this game There was a lot of great defense with some very hard hitting from the men in black and white. The Scots were held scoreless until late in the fourth quarter when they were able to score a couple of long touchdowns. The Spartans showed excellent pursuit to the ball on defense with many gang tackles.
This brings the Spartans record to 2 – 1 with an away game this Friday against ALA. Don’t ask me, I have no idea who they are either. The Spartans will be gone the entire month of September with their next home game on Oct. 5 against Delta.

The Emery High School Golf Team traveled to the Carbon Golf Course on Aug. 30 for the golf tournament being held there. The Emery Team has had a tough year so far, and once again came out behind the rest of the teams. Carbon played the best taking a total combined score of 312. Next was Delta with 342, followed closely by North Sanpete with 343. Juan Diego placed fourth with 348, and Emery took last with a combined score of 367.
Senior Leo Sarver played best for the Emery Team taking an 84 on 18 holes. Mark Guymon took second with a score of 88. Jason Giles followed with a 96; Garrett Vantussenbrook, 99; Tayler Tanner, 107; Kody Thompson, 109; Addison Collard, 110; Andrew Terry, 114; Justin Cox, 117; and Trevor Rowley 140.
This tournament left the Emery Team’s combined tournament scores still 20 strokes behind the fourth place competitor North Sanpete, and 70 strokes behind the first place team, Carbon. We hope to see things look up for Emery Golf at the tournament next week.
