Millsite Hosts Red, White and Blue Tournament

Vallyn Bernard

The annual Red, White, and Blue golf tournament was held at the Millsite golf course on July 21 with 46 golfers from around the state competing this year. Players from as far away as Ogden and St. George came to take a swing at winning a few dollars and to enjoy the beautiful nine-hole course.

The 9:30 am shotgun start included 17 local golfers in the hunt for some prize money and fun. Clayton Ward, who has held the reins on this tournament the past few years got paired up with some out of area ringers this go round leaving him off the plaque this year, but not out of the money.

Paul Brinkerhoff from Orangeville also ended up in the money, but probably had his most exciting moment on the course when one of his foursome, Gary Denhalter dropped in a hole in one on the par 3 hole #5.

The tournament was three rounds, 27 holes, with each round being played from a different colored tee. Thus we have the month we celebrate Ole Glory, and the red, white, and blue tees on each hole. Red is where the ladies tee up, white the men, and blue the pro’s. I always tee off from the blue so those watching are impressed, but my scorecard shows that I have enough strokes to prove I get my money’s worth on the course
.
The first place prize money of $350 went to Mark Booher from Herriman, one of the aces playing with Clayton. Second place and $300 went to Carl Jensen of Huntington with $250 going to Marv White of Ferron for his third place finish. The top seven places rounded out with: 4th place-Clayton Ward from Huntington, 5th Brawny Killpack from Ferron, 6th Paul Brinkerhoff from Orangeville, and 7th Eric Pederson from Ferron.

Jordan Leonard, Millsite’s general manger and Club Pro, was pleased about this year’s turnout, and even more excited about the future of the course. Presently Millsite is a nine-hole par 36 course, but in September everyone is holding their breath for the CIB board to give final approval for another nine holes to be added. Once final approval is received construction will immediately begin on the new nine holes, making Millsite one of the hardest courses in America and one of the most beautiful.

The course is open nine months out of the year with a driving range, restaurant, and fishing nearby, which is what I spend most of my time doing for golf balls. I wear one of my fishing hats when I go golfing because it seems appropriate, you know how fisherman have a little problem with the truth. In the pro shop at Millsite is a plaque with the definition of a Golfer: One who yells “Fore”… takes six and writes down 5. See why I wear a fishing hat.

The next tournament will be the Callaway Amateur on Aug. 25-26. This tournament will be limited to the first 96 golfers and entry forms and fees must be received by Aug. 15. If you have any questions call Millsite at 435-384-2887 or visit their web site www.millsitegolfcourse.com
