Relay for Life Proves Huge Success

Relay for Life proved to be a huge success in Emery County in 2007 as the community rallied to support the American Cancer Society fund raiser. In a record breaking year, donations of $34,642.76 were raised in the community this year, almost $10,000 more than has ever been raised in the county relay before. The team bringing in the most donations this year was the Retired Senior Volunteer Program Team, which collected a whopping $3,973 for the relay. They were followed by Emery Telcom, which collected $2,740 and the Thermal Tech team, which collected $2,689 for the relay.

The June 29-30 event at the Emery High School track proved to be not only touching, but inspiring and entertaining as this year’s organizers invited teams to participate in a Miss Relay Contest, where men came dressed in women’s clothing and competed for the title of Miss Relay, complete with a talent contest, if you could call it that. In the Miss Relay contest Otto Dickman was named Miss Congeniality and young Cayson Reber was named Miss Relay for 2007, raising $837 for Relay for Life. Kyle Behling came in second, raising $283 for the relay and Jess Nielson, shaved legs and all, came in third, raising $150 for the relay.
Not only did the all night event prove to be the most successful relay ever for the county, it brought the community together in a single night to join hands and celebrate those who have survived their battle with cancer, honor those who have passed away and hope for a future where cancer is no longer a threat to anyone.
