Emery Youth City Council auction proves huge success
The Emery Youth City Council had an idea for a little fundraiser where they hoped to get enough in donations to help put up lights at the Emery Town ball complex.
Their idea was simple enough. They would make treats, get some items donated and auction off services to the community. Simple things like pulling weeds, mowing yards, babysitting, washing cars. Anything they could think of where they could work for a donation to their cause.
Mistie Christiansen, youth city council coordinator, said they hoped to raise about $700 with the fundraiser. “And we thought that was pretty lofty,” she said.
So when Randy and Laurie Anderson started the auction on the evening of June 19 with an opening bid of $30 for a service of weeding, Christiansen thought that perhaps the opening bid was a little too high to get any takers. When the service of weeding went for a closing bid of $80 she thought again.
“I thought this was going to be good,” she said.
The little town of Emery came out in force with approximately 150 people crowding into the pavilion to bid on everything there. Plates of Rice Krispie treats sold for $15, donated items from Maggie Hansen (porcelain dolls) and David Mangum (elk carvings) went fast and by the time the auction was a third of the way through they had already met their original goal of $700.
“We were blown away,” Christiansen said.
When all was said and done every auction item was gone and the youth city council had raised a total of $1758.50 for the ball park lights for their efforts. Business owners in Emery have also added donations toward the park lights.
Emery Town, a close knit community, has worked together to take a giant step forward in putting up the park lights and the youth city council showed that they were willing to work for improvements to the town.
“This is their way of saying ‘we’ll work for it.’ They put up a lot of service hours,” Christiansen said.

Sheriff visits Green River School of Rock to discuss summer safety
Emery County Sheriff Lamar Guymon visited the School of Rock, a summer school reading and service program at the Community Center/Boys and Girls Club of Green River on June 21.
Sheriff Guymon talked to the kids about safety and looked on as they participated in 6th Gear Skating, a mentoring program aimed at tobacco awareness, completing school assignments, reading and good life choices.
The kids made posters about the consequences of smoking and tobacco use. They participated in a skate rodeo, and wore new helmets provided by the Utah State Health department and safety gear provided by CCJJ (Commission on Juvenile Justice). There were water sports, reading, and a movie about helmet safety. Outward Bound kids joined in and then did a service project, pulling weeds at the firehouse. |
