Whle the scrapbook craze may not be a uniquely Utah creation, it most definitely has its legion of fans in the state and in Emery County as well.
A scrapbooking class is held the third Friday of every month at the Castle Dale Senior Citizens Center, where friends and fans of scrapbooking gather to create memories from their memories.
Tiffany Conover from Ferron and Felice Clements from Payson host the scrap booking class each month. Conover, who is a consultant with Top Line Creations and Clements, who works for Treasured Memory Scrapbook, met at a craft fair and started working together in January of 2006 to put on the monthly class.
“Preserving memories is what scrapbooking is all about,” Clements said. She became hooked on scrapbooking when introduced to it by a church group leader.
Conover said she started out making cards and her hobby evolved into scrapbooking.
The June 15 gathering of scrapbook fans at the senior center started at 5:30 p.m. and went until Midnight, with people coming and going as time allowed to work on their own projects, visit with friends and learn something new.
This month Emily Albrecht from Ferron, a Stampin’ Up demonstrator was on hand to show some of the different stamps that were available.
This was the first class Albrecht has attended as a demonstrator. She said she has been a scrapbook demonstrator for a year and has been scrapbooking for 12 years.
Conover said that girls as young as 8 will come to the class and as the women gather at a table to work on their projects it isn’t hard to notice that with the exception of Clements’ husband looking rather forlorn in the corner, there are no men at the gathering.
“Scrapbooking is a girl thing. In the 20 or 30 classes I’ve done I think there’s been one man in the class,” Clements said.
