Spartans Stomp Hawks in Homecoming to Remember
Vallyn Bernard
The Emery Spartans regrouped after spending a week working on the wounds left by their defeat to Delta. On Friday night, in front of an excited homecoming crowd, the Spartans soundly beat North Sanpete 47 to 21.
In the first half it was in your face football with both teams pounding on each other up and down the field. The Spartan defense was again alive and well in this game holding the Hawks twice in the first half on goal line stands. When the dust settled for halftime homecoming activities the Spartans held a hard fought 6 to 0 lead.
As low scoring as the first half was, the second half was on the other end of the spectrum with 62 points being scored. The second half started with a flash, and if you weren’t back from the concession stand you missed some exciting football. The Hawks got the ball to open the second half, and on the first place from scrimmage ran 61 yards for a touchdown. In a matter of seconds the game was tied 6 to 6, and it looked like North Sanpete was back in the game.
On the Hawks’ kickoff, Mike Jones had a little trouble fielding the ball, and finally got it under control on the one yard line. With some great blocking and at break neck speed Jones headed north with the ball securely in hand and 99 yards later he was holding the ball high over his head in the North Sanpete end zone, either tying, or breaking a school record for longest kickoff return. On the extra point there was trouble on the snap to Dempsey Jeffs, who simply plowed in for two points. Within 32 seconds of the second half on back to back plays 14 points had been scored, and this was just the beginning.
In the end the Spartans stacked up 395 yards in total offense. Dempsey Jeffs completed 9/11 passes for 132 yards, with one 19 yard touchdown toss to Skyler Jorgensen. The Spartan ground attack was firing on all cylinders as Mike Jones got a hat trick in touchdowns. Besides his spectacular 99 yard race for a touchdown to open the half, Mike scored from 9 and 16 yards while piling up 71 yards in rushing.. Chance Ariotti ran for 33 yards, and punched in a 7 yard touchdown. Jordan Gee added 35 yards to the rushing total, but his highlight of the game was returning an interception 98 yards for a touchdown. This probably got Jordan in the school record books with Mike. To finish off the Spartans ground assault was Colby Snow, who had a great night with 131 yards, and a touchdown from 29 yards out.
Wow, two records on the same night, and to make them even sweeter they happened in front of a homecoming crowd. The Spartan faithful were rewarded on homecoming with a fantastic firework display in the skies over Spartan field and on the scoreboard.
This week the Spartans play a non-region game at Park City to close out the regular season. If Delta loses to Juan Diego this week, Emery, North Sanpete, and Delta will end the season in a three-way tie for second place in region. A coin toss will determine who gets the home field for the opening game of the state playoffs.
The win against North Sanpete assured the Spartans a winning season no matter what happens for the rest of the year. It’s been a while since the football program at Emery High has tasted this much victory. For Head Coach Jim Jones, his coaching staff, and the Spartan players to pull this off in Coach Jones’ second year back after his little vacation from football is pretty amazing. If you haven’t enjoyed a wonderful football season with the Spartans, it’s your own fault.
Now, here’s the good part, this season is not over and these young Spartans have the ability to provide a lot more exciting moments for those willing to stand with them. Emery may not have charter buses to take fans to games like Park City does, but everyone knows were Park City is located. Don’t forget your battle flags.

Despite Valiant Effort Spartan Volleyball Team Falls to Delta
Casey Wood
Despite a valiant effort the Emery High School Volleyball team fell to Delta in three on Oct. 11 at Emery High. Despite the loss the night was intense for the team and the fans as they showed the team spirit that makes Emery High what it is.
The evening began with senior volleyball team members getting awards from their team and coaches. Being Homecoming Week, the night was also Cereal Night for Emery High School, so the student council had a council member, Brantz Woolsey, dressed up like a Wheaties box and cheering on the team throughout the night. During the game students shook cereal boxes and cheered on the team. Following the game the students were invited to go to the lunch room and eat cereal together. After cereal the students traveled back to the Spartan Center to watch beefcake volleyball, which is basically guys playing volleyball without their shirts. Although the game was a loss, the valiant efforts and events following the game still made the evening enjoyable for all.
