Meagan Pearson Honored with High School Heisman

Vallyn Bernard

After the third period of the Lady Spartans game against North Sanpete on Jan. 17, Gwen Callahan, Emery High School principal, presented Meagan Pearson with the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. This program has been around since 1994 and recognizes the nation’s most esteemed high school seniors for excellence in academics, athletics, and community/school involvement.

Whenever we hear Heisman all thoughts go to sports, but Meagan excels in more than athletics.
For two years she has been the editor of the high school yearbook. With her 4.0 GPA Meagan is a member of the National Honor Society and been named Academic All State in volleyball. Besides being a starter on last year’s 3A State Championship basketball team, this season Meagan is a team co-captain while averaging almost 12 points per game.

The amazing thing about this award is students are chosen from the entire Utah student body, meaning Meagan, from little ole Emery High, beat out students from the giant 5A and 4A schools.

Emery High School took approximately 25 students to the “Warrior Wars” speech and debate meet in Taylorsville on Jan. 25-26.

The first night contained debate events only. Emery High students participated in Student Congress and Public Forum. The speech and drama events were held on the second day. Emery High students competed in Spar, Storytelling, Prose/Poetry, Humorous Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation, Declamation, and Impromptu.

Emery High School took home the Small Schools Sweepstake, a trophy indicating high points in many areas given to the top ranking 3A or lower division school. Individual trophies went to: Nicole Smith and Kameron Stilson: 3rd place, novice Public Forum; Kameron Stilson: 4th place, best novice debate speaker; Trevor Rowley: 4th place, novice Impromptu; Brantz Woolsey: 4th place, novice Prose/Poetry; Kaitlin Potter: 1st place, novice Storytelling, 4th place, novice Humorous Interpretation; and Casey Wood: 1st place, novice Student Congress.
The tournament ended a success for Emery High School. Next week is the Bingham/Riverton tournament.
