Drama students hit the stage at Star Theatre

Kathy Ockey

The Emery High Drama Department presented three plays at the Star Theater in Huntington on Jan. 9-10. These were performed by the Beginning Drama students of Neal Peacock. The three plays presented were Drop Dead Juliet, Jolly Roger, and MmmBeth.

Drop Dead Juliet is a spoof on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and involves Juliet trying to convince William Shakespeare to change his play so that she doesn’t have to die at the end of it.
Jolly Roger is a spoof of pirate movies and involves the Scourge of the Seven Seas-Jolly Roger trying to marry Lady Loveduck, a rich widow.

MmmBeth is a take-off of Shakespeare’s MacBeth. It is called MmmBeth because it is considered bad luck to say “MacBeth” in a theater. This wacky story gets completely out of control as MmmBeth and his evil wife try to murder – well – everybody in the play.

The plays were well attended and the audience was thoroughly entertained with the students’ performances.

The plays are the final assignment of the semester for the Beginning Drama classes at Emery High School and as such they are the final test for the students involved. These productions were held at the Star Theater rather than at Emery High so that the students could experience something new and different in theater performance.

Auto team races toward championship round of competition

The Emery High Auto team took second place overall at the San Juan Community College Auto competition Nov. 16.

Joe Bennett took first place individually and Nick Oviatt took ninth. The other four members, Jesse McArthur, Booker Erickson, Rhyker Allred , and Vern Kofford scored high enough to give the team the second place score.

The juniors and seniors in auto took the written test for the Weber State auto competition on the Nov. 14 to see if they qualified for the hands on championship round being held Jan. 17. The team qualified for the championship with Booker Erickson and Joe Bennett being the top scores and will compete as the hands on team. Colton Grange placed third and will attend as the alternate. Colton Miller was the high scoring junior and will attend the competition to see how they work.
In February a six person team will be attending a competition in Hobbs New Mexico at New Mexico Junior college.

This will be a five day trip and the team is made up of seniors who have earned the right to attend.
